At the national level, USAID supports government and political systems by assisting key institutions such as the Election Commission, the Constituent Assembly, and political parties to become more democratic, inclusive, and effective. At the local level, USAID helps communities to participate in development decision making and foster linkages between citizens and their Village Development Committees and District Development Committees, as well as other local government entities.
USAID'S DEMOCRACY AND GOVERNANCE PROGRAM IN NEPAL AIMS TO:
- Strengthen democratic political culture and civil society by supporting the means through which citizens can freely organize, advocate, and communicate;
- Promote government institutions that are democratic, effective, responsive, sustainable, and accountable to citizens; and
- Ensure that elections are competitive and reflect the will of an informed citizenry.
